Mens Vintage Hats

June 25, 2015

Hats are not worn these days nearly as often as they might be. It’s true, a man might pull a knitted beanie over his ears on a cold winter’s day, or even wear one non-stop for no reason on even the hottest – the less said about this the better. Also, best not to mention the ubiquitous baseball cap – it hardly counts. Mens vintage hats are a hat with more style points than that.

Rock-stars in mens vintage hats

Rockstars are quite keen on mens vintage hats – of course there was Jay Kay from Jamiroquai – is he still wearing hats? It’s quite a good disguise – take off his hat and Jay Kay becomes invisible on a crowded street. Much like the actress Emilia Clarke complains that she never gets recognised on the street without her long blond Game of Thrones wig.

Other rock stars in mens vintage hats – Pete Doherty from Babyshambles was never seen without a greasy pork pie pushed to the back of his head, but he’s hardly an inspiration – or at least, I hope not. Damon Albarn from Blur had a phase where he sported one, and Boy George is an aficionado of the finest Philip Treacy hats, quite often expertly matching his hat of the day with his eye shadow. In his Karma Chameleon days, he was never to be parted from his cute bowler hat. Then of course, there’s Slash in his top hat.

Russell Brand just about demands his own category on the hat front. He really likes his hats, and mostly wears them with aplomb. We’ll ignore his knitted hats, and concentrate on his range of bowler hats, top hats, and cowboy hats. We imagine that Russell Brand has stacks of pretty hat boxes in his apartments. (Of course, Russell Brand is not a rock star, but he looks like one, so he still counts).

Women in vintage mens hats

Vintage mens hats are an essential accessory for women, giving an edge to an otherwise feminine outfit or finishing off crisp tailoring perfectly.

Vintage movie stars in mens vintage hats

Of course, the best wearers of mens vignette hats are movie stars from the 40s. Humphrey Bogart, Spencer Tracey, Dirk Bogarde – any noir hero knew how to wear a homburg hat.

Playing a pirate or Robin Hood or a Victorian gentleman is also a good way for movie stars to get to wear hats. Sherlock Holmes or even Dr Watson is also a good opportunity. If you don’t happen to be in a movie production right now, you can a) set up your own film company double quick b) just pretend that you’re in a film, and are strolling the streets on a break, or c) just be unapologetically eccentric.

Of course, you don’t have to be a rock star or eccentric to wear mens vintage hats. The pork pie hat is very popular with hipsters, and many men love the vintage look – great for heading to Goodwood Revival or just looking natty every day. Just don’t forget, a real gentleman will wear a hat – but he always raises it for the ladies.
