Vintage Lacoste

June 13, 2015

If you like lacoste clothing and in particular vintage Lacoste, read on..Lacoste was founded in 1933 by Rene Lacoste along with Andre Gillier, who happened to also be president and owner of a rather impressive French knitwear firm. They started tentatively with a tennis shirt with a crocodile logo. The 50s saw the brand expand to the United States, and Rene’s son Bernard would take over the company in the early 60s. The Lacoste brand was now heavily associated with a preppy look much favoured in the States, and with the introduction of other items such as shorts, sunglasses, perfume, tennis, deck and walking shoes and leather goods, Lacoste became successful the world over.

Vintage Lacoste – Into the noughties

The noughties has seen the appointment of Christophe Lemaire who’s helped to modernise the company, bringing a fresh, modern look to the brand. Lacoste is worn by sports people the world over including tennis stars and golfers alike.

Lacoste is popular with people all over the world and you don’t have to be a sports superstar to wear the brand. As you can imagine, like with all successful sports brands, there’s a penchant for vintage items and Vintage Lacoste is no different in that respect.

Preppy look still popular

Vintage Lacoste is popular with those who favour a preppy look, with polo shirts, oversized sweaters and tracksuit jackets smartened up with skinny jeans, shorts and skirts. The tennis skirts are great for summer separates, and can be worn with one of Lacoste’s vintage polo shirts, or a contemporary top or vest, and matched with flats, either pumps, Lacoste tennis pumps, or heels.Lacoste bombers are great, especially their shiny bomber jackets from the 80s, if that’s not your thing, how about their striped block coloured jumpers, or logo’d wool jumpers.

The great thing about Lacoste is that they never look too sporty, so you get the great quality clothing that Lacoste produces, but without an overly outdoor look, if that’s not what you’re into. It’s easy to create a preppy or nerdy look that can be dressed up or down with accessories, vintage or contemporary. Like Fred Perry, the Lacoste polo shirt is a respected brand and they’re so versatile and easy to match with other items in your wardrobe.

Accessories

Like other well-known sports brands, vintage Lacoste accessories are also sought after. Their tennis bags are no exception, as are their hats, watches, socks and belts. All easy to mix and match with other non-sports brand items, creating a unique look of your own. Their tennis sweaters are to die for, and if you’re a girl, you can look equally as good in the men’s. Oversized is great, matched with denim shorts, skinny jeans or a skirt. The chunky rib with v neck and 2 stripes at the neck are exquisite, as is the discrete obligatory logo and the 2 stripes above the hem of the sweater. It can also be worn over a summer dress or a flimsy fabric mini. The sheer preppy simplicity of it gives it plenty of ways of wearing it and it’s a clear fashion staple for all the seasons.

Keep your eyes peeled for some authentic vintage Lacoste and embrace your inner nerd. Key pieces can be worn in anyway way you want, look out for good quality belts that can be worn with dresses and pants, watches, and vintage Lacoste footwear, which can be worn dressed up or down.
