September 21, 2016

September sees the emergence of trends and not just for the upcoming cooler season. This month starts the illustrious showcase of designer fashion and new trends for spring/summer 2017. Now you may not be thinking that far ahead just yet but the fashion weeks across the ‘big four’ fashion capitals are getting into full swing. Each displays a unique and innovative approach to modern fashion. They also display charming characteristics from vintage decades and past iconic style. First up in the fashion calendar comes from a location fondly known as ‘the city that never sleeps’. New York fashion week begins the circuit with well-known designers gracing the catwalk with their stunning collections.

Popular amongst celebrities and fashion A-Listers alike, New York fashion week offers an edgy and unique start to the style proceedings. Firm favourites showcasing their wears include designers such as Vera Wang, Victoria Beckham and Michael Kors to name a few. So this season are we going to see candy colours and seaside shades for spring/summer 2017? Let’s take a look at what’s been wowing the industry with a guide to spring/summer trends from New York fashion week.

New york fashion week SS17 trends – Pretty ruffles

Although New York fashion week has just drawn to a close, we’ve seen some emerging trends from this stylish location. Feminine spring looks are always perfect for the warmer weather. There was a strong style displayed with ruffled edges and detailing throughout collections. This looks gives heaps of texture and interesting lines, ideal for creating a statement look. Designers such as Zimmermann, Jason Wu and Jill Stuart opted for variations in texture. Displaying elegant frills on evening styles to bouncy and bold fabrics for day wear.

SS17 trends – Denim dreams

Denim is one of those go to fabrics, ideal for any season. Yet for spring/summer 2017 our love of statement denim still holds strong. One of the biggest and most inspirational collections that set the catwalk alight was the showcase by Carolina Herrera. Her 35th anniversary show at New York fashion week opted for an outstanding display of red carpet denim. Dresses included interesting hemlines and necklines and plenty of texture. For other designers, denim took on the traditional informal style with contrasting colours, patchwork looks and ombre colourings as offered by Red Valentino.

SS17 trends – Soft velvet

Believe it or not our very own British designer Victoria Beckham opted for several soft and luscious velvet designs for her collection. Notably famous for her sleek silhouettes and minimalistic lines, this season saw a slightly different tone. Crushed velvet is usually evident is autumn/winter collections yet this transition has been given a spring update. Summer colour shades paired perfectly with luxurious texture and definition. It’s certainly a showstopper and something to watch out for in the new season.

SS17 trends – Slouchy and oversized

This trend featured in several designer showcases during New York fashion week. Think 1970s boho chic inspirations and you’re nearly there. Designer M Missoni favoured oversized and slouchy garments and opted for wider trouser legs, statement leather belts and coloured knits. McQ Alexander McQueen also opted for a 70s influenced collection with chunky platforms, dark denim with deeper tones such as purples, silvers and black.

SS17 – Cut out style

With the option of bearing a little more skin during summer, designers gave a glimpse of how we could do just that. Just in a super stylish way! Make way for cut outs and peep holes in your spring/summer wardrobes. This trend offers a flattering way to style a summer look. Designer Proenza Schouler showed us how, with cute knotted peep-holes on a sleek knitted dress. Perfect polished yet subtly sensual.

Colours of the season

New york fashion week – Mellow yellow

This colour is always a popular choice for spring and summer. Anything from lemon through to mustard shades were showcased in collections. Many designers illuminated the catwalk with tantalizingly bright shades paired with striking accessories to match this statement trend. Yellow often represents a perfect picture of the warmer months ahead. The new seasons creations at New York fashion week highlighted this beautifully with a variety of style and design on display.

New york fashion week SS17 – Pure White

A popular colour during New York fashion week was the crisp, fresh tones of white. Many designers created exquisite garments incorporating this versatile colour, with variations on shade and texture. White is certainly a favourite during the summer and accessories give you the added option for a touch of colour. Collections showcased different styles from minimalistic looks to soft broderie anglaise patterns.

Shoe trends of SS17

There were key shoe trends highlighted in the new season’s designer collections. Two major examples to enjoy for the warmer months included some firm favourites. The iconic slip on and the ankle strap sandal.

SS17 trends – Slip on shoes

The elegant and stylish choice of footwear for spring/summer 2017 gave the perfect alternative to your ‘flats’ or ‘pumps’. Slip on shoes came in all shapes, sizes and colours. Designers opted for anything from studded examples to extra pizzazz with metallic tones. It’s an easy shoe option for the new season and gives you a refreshed look for your wardrobe.

New york fashion week SS17 trends – Ankle strap sandals

It’s no surprising that sandals have topped the trend charts at New York fashion week for spring/summer 2017. We all love to bare your toes in the warmer months and next year will be no exception. A popular shoe in many collections featured the ankle strap sandal. These were cool, casual flats or flatforms offering a 90s vibe to the mix. Designers had an anything goes approach to this trend opting for a variety of colours, prints, patterns and detailing. Stylish and casual ankle strap sandals are certainly a must buy for next season.
