September 6, 2016

sIt’s that time of year again where we start getting excited about the new seasons fashion. It’ll soon be time to pull on a thick wooly jumper and get out those cosy boots. Autumn/winter sees a revival in beautiful hues and exciting colour palettes bursting with top trends everyone wants to wear. Vintage fashion offers a fabulous variety of AW16 trends with catwalk collections using influence from past iconic style. The colour of the 60s and 70s always offers an interesting mix into autumn/winter clothing. Boasting perfect shades to match with key on trend pieces.

Soon the capitals of fashion will be showcasing next season’s goodies but let’s take a look at what’s hot right now for autumn/winter 2016 with a sprinkling of vintage inspiration.

AW16 trends – Glamorous capes

Capes have featured in our cooler seasons on more than one occasion. This year sees them glammed up as a slightly different styling option. We’re not just talking bulky, knitted examples. This season’s AW16 designer collections oozed radiance and glamour by incorporating shimmer and 1940s movie star inspiration. Fashion designer Erdem displayed a stunning example with fluted hem and sequin embellishment.

AW16 trends – Sparkling sequins

You couldn’t miss the glistening parade from collections sporting this season’s perfect evening trend. Sequins are always popular for party wear and designers used this staple decoration in everything from head to toe adornment to subtle hints of sparkle. This trend will certainly be making waves on the high streets nearer Christmastime and is the perfect answer for any party or evening-wear.

AW16 trends – Blue velvet

This versatile fabric offers a chic and understated look for AW16 trends. Top-shop Unique offered inky colour palettes alongside other designers including Roksanda who displayed a strong navy power suit, perfect for day to evening-wear. Velvet has strong vintage influences and Preen captured the essence of its bohemian vibes with natural shades in the collection.

AW16 trends – Frills and ruffles

This season many designers opted for the pretty and feminine ruffle. Collections were adorned with plenty of frills and texture. Ranging from hemlines, collars, seams and even handbags. The bigger the better was standing out amongst designer collections. Making a statement with huge frills is a great head turner for AW16 trends.

AW16 trends – Fluttery features

Texture was a key trend of autumn/winter with beautifully feminine touches complimenting collections. Elegant and soft feathers were featured on pieces showcased by Christopher Kane and McQueen, who both displayed divine creations oozing glamour and sophistication.

AW16 trends – Cocktail dressing

Cocktail dressing for autumn/winter had subtle hints of the vintage fashions of the 80s. Designers such as Anderson used funky shades to showcase this fun and feminine look. Ra-ra skirts and single shoulder tops were the optimum of vintage inspiration yet had a perfectly on trend revamp for AW16 trends.

AW16 trends – Shimmering metallic

Catwalk collections were awash with graceful and glittering pieces for AW16 trends. Designer showcases were full of metallic garments ranging from head to toe shimmer or subtle variations as seen in Temperley London’s range. This popular trend has re-emerged this season and is an ideal choice for party-wear as we head into the winter and Christmas season. Alongside the other shiny embellishment trends, this autumn/winter we will be seeing lots of elegant sparkle filtering through to high streets.

AW16 trends – Oversized outerwear

Comfort and style is key to our wardrobe staples in the cooler months and there’s no surprise that designers relished in this trend challenge. Creations for AW16 trends have seen oversized outerwear take centre stage. Think big puffa jackets, long slouchy coats and big accessories to accompany this cosy style.

AW16 – Grown up bows

This subtle AW16 trend for the new season came in several variations in designer collections. Some displayed small yet beautiful embellishment around the neckline. Others such as Preen offered large and dramatic examples. It’s a super easy way to update your look for autumn/winter 2016 and gives a feminine edge to a number of outfits.

AW16 – Graphics

Slogans, motifs and graphics have proved hot property over the past few seasons. Designers for autumn/winter have updated the look with fabulously bright design and spectacular cuts. This season Christopher Kane and Mary Katrantzou showcased a look hinting that this updated style can be worn at whatever age with its granny inspired looks.

AW16 – Patterns for the season

Autumn florals

A popular pattern often associated with spring, florals hit the catwalk in a spectacular fashion. Mixed with the new colour palette for AW16 trends, this moodier, romantic look was perfectly executed for the season. Examples of autumn floral hues appeared in collections for Mulberry and Balenciaga offering a feminine and edgy look for the cooler months.

Traditional checks

It wouldn’t be winter if we didn’t see people wrapped up in traditional checked coats or tartan scarves. AW16 trends this season were no exception. Burberry showcased their statement wears and other designers such as Thom Browne opted for bold, on trend colour palettes for their check designs.

AW16 – Colours for the season

Pastel pink

The cooler months lend themselves to darker tones and moodier shades yet the catwalk saw a refreshing alternative this season. Pastel pinks made waves in several collections and gave an elegant feel to design. This tone was paired beautifully with darker raspberry tones in the Roksanda collection to create a transitional day wear to evening look with ease.

Darker shade of black

Always a huge feature for autumn/winter and a firm favourite for evening-wear, black was the colour of choice. Sultry looks and stunning gowns sauntered down the catwalk giving us a fresh look on aw16 trends in evening-wear. Designers such as Simone Rocha and Felder Felder showcased innovative and exciting design in this dark shade.

Each season we see a range of updated trends and vintage inspired looks. Creations in today’s modern industry have huge influence from cuts and styles crafted in past decades. AW16 trends this season sees everything from the glamour of the 1940s to the party shimmer of the 1980s to everything in between. We can’t get away from the cycle of trends and AW16 is a great way to update your wardrobe and add a mix of current style with vintage flair.
