September 9, 2015

Crop tops come and goes and you’ll be pleased to know that they’re back again. On the other hand you may not be too happy about it, and you’re now groaning and crying behind a pillow.

Don’t worry, the crop tops aren’t compulsory, there are plenty of other looks this autumn to carry you through the short days and longer nights.

Crop Tops are back – 2015

However, for those of you who love crop tops and celebrate their return, here is a trip down memory lane for its early debut back in the 80s, how it looks today, and how you can use vintage to your advantage for the fall and rise of crop tops.

The 80s & 90s

Whatever you say about crop tops, they really are a versatile piece, it can be worn alone or over a t-shirt or body, they can be worn with a jacket, cardigan or simply by itself with jeans, shorts, leggings or a shirt.Perhaps even over a dress.

Although it can be merciless for those with a less than perfect stomach, it can hide other parts you may be less than happy with, such as your shoulders or upper arms.

The crop top has already made a return only a couple of years ago back in 2013, but it made its first appearance in the 80s.

Remember Madonna singing Lucky Star in her music video? It spread like wild-fire after that. From the 80s to the 90s the crop top stuck around after its initial debut.

The 80s brought statement crop tops with large letters or dayglow colours and the craze for aerobics wear made them popular at the gym.For the 90s they were less baggy and more of a tight fit, with sleeves both long and short or with spaghetti straps.

Then it disappeared and we thought we’d never see it again, but that really underestimates what fashion does – recycle, reinvent and return. In 2013 the crop top came back again on the high street and it was a case of anything goes, from baggy style to a tighter version.

Then it went away for a while and now it’s back.Crop tops are back in 2015 and you can wear it anyway you want.

The current batch are beautiful too, we’re talking well-fitting with darts, knotted at the waist, a close fitted shirt type, colourful with thin straps – you get the general idea. And what was Taylor Swift wearing at the VMAs? Yes, a close-fitting long-sleeved crop top.

Vintage crop tops

If you plan what you’re wearing well, you too can wear the crop top so don’t deny yourself the versatility that this garment offers.Whether it with high-waisted pants, or wear it with a high-waisted skirt for a night out, you can do it.

So if you don’t want to go out and buy a brand new crop top on the high street, and why would you, then go vintage.

You can get a close fitting one from the 90s or a baggy and brightly coloured cropped tee from the 80s and look every bit as fresh as you would in a newly bought one.

The beauty of vintage and the added beauty of returning fashions is that a piece from the original period is always going to be better.

Wear it with contemporary pieces, with either contemporary or vintage accessories.
