Beret

Red and White Knitted Beret

Beret, latin language origin birrus, later provincial French, Spanish berret, basque cap is a unique style of head-wear that has a small pleated or knitted rim around the funnel, fitting fairly tight to the circumference of the upper head and a wider, flat extension on the top of the head.

With it’s earliest, documented, recorded origins stemming from the middle ages. It could also be that the beret may have originated from farmers and town and city dwellers, simply donning any available clothing or fabric over the head, when rain fell. The beret then may have been fashioned, over time into an affordable and protective form of head-wear for the poor.
