Create The Look The Feminine Thirties

September 3, 2014

The thirties saw a slight change to fashion with looks becoming more conservative than in previous years. This decade also saw quite a few changes to fashionable clothing with alternative synthetic materials being used to produce outfits. Fabrics such as rayon, wool, silk, nylon and cotton were common textiles used in this period.

The Feminine Thirties

Femininity was a major factor on the designs of clothing during the thirties with fashionable clothing tending to be long and sleek. Chic and sophisticated clothing was very popular due to the large influence from major Hollywood screen stars. This era also introduced the bra cup size so underwear became an important factor in women’s clothing.

Dresses and skirts were a staple fashion item for many women with pretty and full designs that accentuated the waist. Hemlines were very conservative, with daywear skimming mid calf length and eveningwear floating around ankle or floor length. In comparison women’s work wear took on a slightly masculine feel with tailored sleek suits creating an emphasis on the small waist yet still embracing soft feminine lines with pleating.

This decade created a beautiful feminine feel that styled iconic looks for women’s daywear and transformed eveningwear into sleek sophistication. Take a look at our essential day and evening looks for graceful 30’s style.

The Thirties – Daywear

Feminine dresses and skirts were the perfect choice for modern 30’s women. Hemlines were longer than in the previous years but this created beautiful graceful style. Popular colours of the decade included neutral palettes but prints were still popular from earlier years including geometric and abstract designs. Styles were also great for accentuating curves, with clinched waistlines and v-necklines giving women the perfect silhouette.

1930’s Eveningwear

Recreating the elegant 1930’s eveningwear look is perfectly simple. Long sleek dresses were incredibly popular with many styles with backless design. Small embellishments were also a feature of thirties eveningwear, with subtle bows and floral decoration on shoulders or around waistlines. Materials for eveningwear were generally silky or light fabrics that created a soft floating feel. Take a look at this gorgeous style on actress Bette Davis.

1930’s Accessories

Hats were still very popular in the 1930’s with styles such as brimmed designs perfectly styled at an angle. Ladies also wore gloves to match their outfit outside of the house. Daywear gloves were small not going past the wrist and generally matched shoes and handbag whilst eveningwear gloves extended to the elbow and were made from silkier fabrics to match elegant party wear.
