October 7, 2016

The final instalment in the fashion week calendar ended in the beautiful city of Paris. This much-adored event for many celebrities and fashion insiders showcased a stunning finale to spring/summer 2017 collections. Famed for being a city of culture and making as its name as one of the ‘Big Four’ in fashion. Paris fashion week always sees a number of exquisite designs and interesting style grace the catwalks.

This show-stopping event gives us several trends to watch out each season. Pairing beautifully with the urban vibes of New York, traditional style from London and the luxury crowd in Milan. Paris fashion week has an intrinsically romantic setting and suits its persona as the home of cultured style perfectly.

Spring/summer 2017 has seen some classic and vintage inspired trends making a comeback for the warmer season. Paris fashion week was no exception. Designers showcased beautiful wears paying homage of iconic style including throwbacks to the 70s and 80s. So what can we expect for the upcoming season from the catwalks of Paris fashion week? Take a look at the trends that will be making their mark on the style circuit and filtering through to the high street.

Paris fashion week – By the seaside

There was a real mixed bag when it came to this interesting trend for spring/summer 2017. Traditionally we can expect Breton stripes, pretty sailor inspired outfits and boat shoes making an appearance. Yet this season saw a mash up with a contrast in style from high-end yachting examples to a shipwrecked vibe. The nautical movement inspired designers such as JW Anderson with patchwork, jute and luggage for long journeys. Whereas designers such as Chloe and Loewe opted for sun bleached styles, bowline knots and knitted dresses.

Paris fashion week – Vintage prints

There were a variety of interesting and quirky prints featured in the designs showcased by Balenciaga and Chloe. Think 1970s porch furniture and you should be able to picture the interesting patterns from a vintage era. These funky designs were laden on boots and dresses all perfectly matched and a real eye catcher.

Paris fashion week – Winter inspired

There has been a change with the ‘see now, buy now’ culture for fashion weeks, so Paris gave some us versatile options for an on trend all year look. There were an abundance of knitwear examples from the Balmain show. Lanvin created cardigans and jackets whilst Dries Van Noten showcased a rather wintery looking trenchcoat with much of the collection in dark hues. This versatile outlook gives some inspiration for a multitude of styles and outfit choices throughout the year.

Slogan city

Slogans were hot on the catwalks of many of the fashion weeks this season. Simple yet punchy design showcased a range of obscure and funky slogans including ‘Thanks Girls’ from Stella McCartney and ‘See U Later’ featured on a Loewe handbag. Slogans are proving a popular and unstoppable force in modern trends. Choosing this style gives you the chance to express your passions, how you’re feeling or your love of something. It’s great for a simple yet stylish look whatever the weather.

80s party girl

Taking on 80s fashion can sometimes be a challenge. If this is a favourite vintage era for you, then Paris was certainly the event to watch out for. The catwalks boasted a fabulous range of inspired pieces from metallic dresses, stilettos and anything ruched. Think Michelle Pfeiffer’s wardrobe from Tequila Sunrise and you’ll be in business. Isabel Marant displayed a vibrant selection of floral prints, padded jackets and an iconic metallic red dress, which was certainly a salute to this vintage decade.

Underwear out

For the pretty yet seductive side to spring/summer 2017, Paris fashion week showed us that showing off your underwear was in. Now we’re not talking trashy examples of this questionable trend. This season sees beautiful sheer tops and tulle dresses worn with pretty lingerie examples (some without any underwear) but we’ll save that for the catwalk. Silky pyjamas were another big hit with designers Lanvin and Agnes B adding another layer to this stunning trend.

Feminine frills

Spring/summer is great way to experiment with floaty and feminine fabrics. Paris fashion week gave us a delightful showcase in beautiful billowing sleeves and frilly shirts. Dries Van Noten even opted to contrast this look with edgy cargo pants giving that feminine and masculine feel together. Longer sleeves are a great way to transition into the warmer months. Spring collections also offer delicate floral lace and intricate design to pair with these statement styles.

Summer shine

Metallics are still in for the warmer seasons. Traditionally a favourite during the festive months sees this transitional style filter through to spring/summer 2017. Anthony Vaccarello for Saint Laurant wowed with his spectacular shiny patent coat and its 80s vibe was shared with the vintage trend featured in several designer collections.

Pink to make the boys wink

This flamboyant and vibrant shade for spring/summer 2017 certainly offered an eye-catching showcase. Pink is set to stand out for next season with designers Balenciaga and Celine favouring this colour in collections.
